“I’m not saying it wasn’t good, Tony, but if we become lovers, it will just complicate our lives. I’m sorry, but I like order. I’ve been through chaos and drama. That’s not what I’m about now. So just accept what I’m saying. If you don’t feel you can, then I can talk to Lucy to see about assigning you to another client for your training.”

He said nothing for a few minutes. The way the ceramic squeaked on the mug he held, she wondered if he was angry. His facial expression gave no clues. When he spoke, there was no emotion in the tone. “I’m sticking with you. I’ll do my job.”

“You’re so stubborn.”

“There’s something I want you to do for me.”

“You’re not seriously asking for favors at a time like this?”

“I want you to get back in the gym with me.”

“Say what?”

His gaze raked over her. “Your softness is good for sex but bad for everything else.”

“I can’t deal with you.” She swung away from him, but stumbled when he grabbed her hand.

He moved around in front of her, blocking the path to the hall.

“Move, Tony.”

He fingered her chin and tipped it up. Gone was the attempt at respecting her as his boss. No, wait, he had never pretended with her. Not even once. She considered cracking him in the face to see if her “softness” did any damage. Then she thought better of it because she might break her fingers on his stupid jaw.

“I want you in the gym with me. You have a knack for boxing.”

“At what point did you see a ‘knack?’”

“You need it.”

“Why would I? I have you, apparently, and I can’t get rid of you until my time is up or I call the cops on you.” She didn’t seriously consider that option. Tony meant well. Plus, he had good guy written all over him. Not to mention that she wasn’t sure she could convince the police he was a danger to her safety when she still wanted him so badly. Sleeping with him hadn’t decreased the desire. It set her body on fire and kept the blaze burning.

His voice dropped low. “You might make me leave tomorrow, Chanise. I want to know you’re okay.”

A lump formed in her throat. “I’m going to tell you the truth, Tony. Lucy hired me for your training only. I’m doing her a favor. Honestly, I couldn’t afford you on my salary. I’m not the person you think I am. I inherited this mausoleum from my grandmother, who I hardly knew. I’m not paying your salary. Lucy is.”

His eyebrows rose.

“I was told to keep quiet about the details of hiring you, but I feel like you’re thinking I’m in some kind of danger, and that just isn’t the case. I’m nobody. There aren’t any bad guys out there trying to kidnap me for my money or whatever. I’m sorry you were misled.
